Pei Wen Lim (above left in photo) recently completed a BSc Social Sciences with Data Science in the UCL Social Research Institute and has produced a series of maps inspired by Manuel Castells’ The Information Age.
“This series of maps tells a story about the material dimensions of the digital society. Inspired by Manuel Castells’ The Information Age, it explores the geography of data centres and electronic waste, which remain largely invisible to end users. By showing how digital networks shape and reconfigure physical space, these maps help explain the complex world of digital society and shed light on where we truly stand in terms of the sustainability of digital expansion.”
Clare Rickard (above right in the photo) is a MSc Social and Geographic Data Science student in the UCL Department of Geography and has put together a series of maps representing the history of London.
“These maps represent a history of London on the axis of time and the axis of height. I used GIS and graphic design software to create these images which were inspired by map wall posters. Researching this project has helped me understand the connection between the natural landscape and human development.”
Arthur Zhang (centre in the photo) has completed a Bsc Geography and will start an Msc in Urban Spatial Science at UCL in September. Arthur has put together a series of maps focusing on the Global Electric Vehicle (EV) market.
“This atlas focuses on the spatio-temporal patterns of the electric vehicle market across various dimensions, from the distribution of charging stations in San Francisco to a broader view of electric vehicle consumption trends and grid distribution across the United States. It also examines the global trade distribution of key hardware components for electric vehicles, such as batteries, and summarises the current global strategic landscape for electric vehicles. Through various scales and visualisation methods, it interprets the global changes brought about by electric vehicles today and the challenges that lie ahead in transitioning to alternative energy transportation methods. In this course assignment, I had the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of this industry and design a map visualisation portfolio that combines insight and aesthetic appeal.”
