Our Technical Team took part in the UCL Technical Showcase 2025, held at UCL East on 25–26 June, joining technical professionals from across the University for two days of inspiration, collaboration, and celebration.
Organised by UCL’s Technical Skills Development Hub (TSDH) and Technical Managers Group (TMG), the showcase is the University’s flagship event to highlight the contributions of technical staff and develop connections between Technical, Academic, and Professional Services colleagues.
This year’s theme, Cutting-Edge Innovation and Collaboration in Technical Services, was highlighted through keynote speeches, interactive exhibits, professional development seminars, and awards recognising excellence across UCL.
Our team represented the Department with an interactive stand showcasing the wide range of expertise that underpins our research and teaching.
The display featured hands-on demonstrations of lake core sampling, insights into managing and preserving the Department’s historic map collections, and an introduction to the Drawing Office’s creative and technical support for fieldwork and teaching.
The exhibit proved popular with visitors, sparking questions and discussions about the innovative techniques and behind-the-scenes work that make Geography’s outputs possible.
The showcase opened with a welcome address from senior UCL leadership, including Vice-Provosts Professor Paola Lettieri and Professor Geraint Rees, and a keynote from the UK Institute for Technical Skills and Strategy.
The first day focused on seminars and workshops exploring professional development, mentorship, sustainability, engagement, and career pathways for technical staff, while the second day featured the main exhibition hall and tours of UCL East’s state-of-the-art facilities.
Reflecting on the event, the Geography Technical Team described it as “engaging, inspiring and energising”, a valuable opportunity to share their work, network with peers from other faculties, and strengthen their role within the wider UCL technical community.
The Department’s Technicians look forward to building on the connections made at the Showcase and continuing to champion the vital contributions of technical staff to UCL’s success. They are already planning for an even bigger presence next year!
