Ian Patmore and Technical Team Shortlisted for National Papin Prizes

Technician Ian Patmore has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Sustainability category, which celebrates individuals who are embedding sustainable practices in technical work. Ian’s efforts to reduce environmental impact in our labs and fieldwork operations have helped make sustainability a core part of the Department’s technical culture.

Separately, the Geography Technical Team has been shortlisted in the Technical Team category. This nomination recognises the team’s outstanding collective contribution to the Department—supporting teaching, research, and field activities through expert technical support, innovation, and teamwork.

Dr Kelly Vere MBE, Director for The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy and Technician Commitment Programme Lead said: “Many congratulations to all individuals and teams who have been nominated and thank you to the colleagues who took their time to nominate to raise the profile and status of technicians within the sector.

“Because the submissions are invited from people who work with technical staff, they also increase recognition and visibility of technicians,” she explained. 

This year, over 328 nominations were submitted, with 67 technicians and teams shortlisted across ten categories. Winners will be announced at the UK Higher Education Technicians Summit (HETS) 2025 on Wednesday, 9 July at the Leonardo Conference Centre, Leicestershire.

HETS 2025 is sponsored by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Midlands Innovation. The Excellence in Sustainability award is sponsored by SocEnv.
