We welcome Dr Sophie Brockmann to our academic staff

We are very pleased to announce that Dr Sophie Brockmann will be joining the Institute of the Americas in September 2023 as Lecturer in Latin American History.

Dr Brockmann is a historian of modern Central America. Her work explores the relationship between humans and nature from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. She holds a PhD in History of Science from Cambridge. Her research has been funded by the Smithsonian Institution, the British Academy, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. She has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship for 2023-4 for her project “Making National Heritage in Transnational Landscapes”, which examines the history of archaeological sites in Guatemala in the context of the expansion of large-scale agriculture in the twentieth century. She published her first monograph with Cambridge University Press in 2020, The Science of Useful Nature in Central America: Landscapes, Networks and Practical Enlightenment, 1784–1838.

Dr Sophie Brockmann comes to UCL Institute of the Americas after academic appointments at the University of Pennsylvania, Senate House University of London, and De Montfort University. At UCL Americas, she will be facilitating modules at UG and PGT levels on themes such as environmental history, history of science, and Central American history.
