Will COP27 be remembered as a success?

UCL had a strong contingent at COP27, with several leading academics from across our departments attending. In a new article for The Conversation, Dr Simon Chin-Yee (Lecturer in International Development) and colleagues detail four reasons why they think that this year’s COP will be remembered as a failure.

They call on all countries to start preparing for COP28 now, for countries to make serious commitments to phasing out fossil fuels and for high-income countries to commit to a transparent and effective loss and damage facility.

“As an African COP, COP27 wanted to centre the negotiations around climate justice. This idea will need to be at the heart of COP28 negotiations, as money will need to be put on the table for adaptation, loss and damages and a rapid ramp-up of renewables.”
