Guidance for researchers applying for fellowships or funded projects to be based in the UCL History Department.
UCL History welcomes researchers outside UCL who are applying for projects and fellowships to be based in the department. We have a long and proud history of early career researchers (as well as senior scholars) holding grants here from many sources, including the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, the Wellcome Trust, and the European Research Council. Many schemes require the support of a full academic member of staff. Applicants should therefore discuss their projects early on with prospective mentors or supporters in the department. Please contact the Director of Research, Professor John Sabapathy, if you are unsure who is best placed to support an application.
There are limits to the number of applications UCL can submit to some schemes, so internal shortlisting may be necessary at departmental and faculty levels. This means that departmental deadlines may be considerably earlier than funders’ deadlines, and you should bear this in mind when planning applications. You should also factor in that the strongest applications will usually have gone through two or three rounds of drafting and revision with the support of your mentor and the Director of Research.
Application materials (including financial details) normally need to be complete at least two to three weeks before funders’ deadlines. The Department will help applicants to develop the budgetary and financial aspects of applications it is supporting. All of this means that it is sensible to begin discussing potential applications with the Department several months in advance of final deadlines.
