Unity in Plurality: Group Compositions of Alexandrian Divinities as Pluralistic Expressions in the Imperial Roman Period
Bojana’s research explores the group compositions of Alexandrian (Isiac) gods and how the kinship model served as a key tool in conceptualising polytheistic reality in the Imperial Roman period. The dominant theoretical paradigm suggests a systemic comparison of every deity’s power to all other powers as the most effective method for understanding polytheism. The group compositions, however, can provide an alternative route. Rather than reconstructing the pantheon ourselves, the group compositions were “sieved” from an infinite polytheistic portfolio by those who lived by them and thus allow a more organic approach.
In this light, the central questions this project seeks to address are: what divine functions or religious concerns they represent and what infrastructure they carry on different social levels. Although epigraphic sources have been the preferred route to exploring polytheism, Bojana’s work focuses on archaeological sources within the framework of the Greek East and Latin West in the Imperial Roman period, which includes coins, statuettes, lamps and votive and temple reliefs. As a result, her research aims to highlight the value of visual art in underscoring the religious character of the gods and help answer (or provide middle ground to) the wider and ever-polarising question of defining Graeco-Roman polytheism – a system or chaos?
Bojana also works in the technology industry, helping retail businesses in driving customer expansion and transforming their digital landscape through the optimisation of CRM, loyalty and AI-powered solutions.
