UCL Geography Exam Procedures
All undergraduate students must follow the guidance below to manage course registration, exams, and graduation processes successfully.
This guide provides step-by-step instructions to help you navigate all aspects of your undergraduate examinations at UCL Geography. It covers everything from course registration and exam entries to accessing past papers, submitting coursework, and understanding how grades are awarded. Following these procedures carefully ensures you stay on track throughout your studies and are fully prepared for assessments and graduation.
Yearly Procedures
- Course registration/exam entry via Portico at the start of the academic year.
- Confirmation of course choices in Term 2; inform the departmental office of changes by the end of week 2.
- Coursework submission as per course guidelines.
- Examination timetables available via Portico at the end of Term 2.
- Past papers available in the Reading Room and online via the UCL Library.
- Exams held between April–May; medical evidence required for deferred assessments.
- External Examiners ensure marking fairness in early June.
- Single Honours: Final Exam Board in June decides grades and class of degree; top students eligible for prizes.
- Joint Degree: Board held a day prior; top students eligible for prizes.
- Official numerical grades available via Portico from end of July.
Note: The Department cannot release final marks before the Exam Board.
- Graduation application forms issued early Term 2.
- Vivas conducted by external examiners may occur; attendance is mandatory if called.
- Dean’s List eligibility for finalists with 70+ average marks and 75% first-class range.
- Exam Board results posted in North-West Wing foyer and emailed.
- Official numerical grading sent mid-August; degree certificates issued late September/early October.
- Graduation ceremony in September; ticket applications must be submitted by end of May.

Stay up to date with your exam timetable, course registrations, and official results by logging into Portico frequently.
Submit coursework on time
Ensure all coursework is submitted by the deadlines set in your course guidelines to avoid penalties or delays in assessment.
Keep medical evidence for deferred assessment
If illness prevents you from attending an exam, obtain medical documentation to support any deferred assessment requests.
Don't
Expect early release of results
Final marks are only confirmed by the Exam Board; the Department cannot provide results in advance.
Miss viva or graduation deadlines
Attend any required viva sessions and submit graduation applications on time to ensure you are eligible to graduate.
Submit graduation applications late
Late applications for graduation tickets will not be accepted, and you and your guests will be unable to attend the ceremony.
