Guidance on Geography coursework, including submission rules, formatting, word counts, late penalties, Extenuating Circumstances, and academic support for all students.
- Discuss proposed topics, methods, and sources with course teachers during office hours.
- Drafts are not read; the final product must be your own work.
- Discussing coursework with others is allowed, but substantial text overlap is prohibited.
- Page size: A4.
- Illustrations included in text, numbered (Table 2, Figure 1) with descriptive titles and sources below.
- Scans/electronic maps/tables acceptable; appendices minimal.
- Front cover: title, course number, course title, candidate name, year.
- Proofread carefully; use one side of paper, double or 1.5 spacing, font ≥12pt.
- References: Harvard author/date style; include full reference list.
- Follow Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences guidance for over-length penalties.
- Include word count on cover sheet (exclude tables, figures, footnotes, bibliography, appendices; include quotations and in-text references).
- Maximum length exceeded by <10%: –5 marks (not below pass).
- Maximum length exceeded by ≥10%: –10 marks (not below pass).
- Over-length + late: greater penalty applies.
- Special rules:
- Abstracts: included in word count unless otherwise stated.
- Appendices: included unless otherwise stated.
- Text boxes (prose, figures, tables): included unless instructions say otherwise.
- Excluded from word count: assignment title, author/exam code, page numbers, reference list, footnotes for primary sources, figure/table captions.
- All coursework, projects, and dissertations must be submitted via Moodle Turn-It-In by 12pm on the due date.
- Check individual module Moodle pages for exact dates.
- Submission via email is not accepted.
- Coursework ≤2 working days late: –10 marks (not below pass).
- 3–5 working days late: max pass mark (UG 40%, PGT 50%).
- 5 working days late (before second week of term 3): mark = 0, but counted as complete.
- Sudden, unexpected, significant circumstances? Submit Extenuating Circumstances (EC) Form. Accepted requests may get extensions or condoned late submission. Students should notify the department in advance when possible.
Extenuating Circumstances and Extensions
Students must complete the EC Form on the GEOGRAPHY UNDERGRADUATE e-Noticeboard and email it to geog.office@ucl.ac.uk with supporting evidence (e.g., doctor’s letter). All applications are considered by the Departmental EC Panel, with outcomes advised within one week. See also Extenuating Circumstances and Reasonable Adjustments (section 10).

Proofread your work
Carefully check spelling, grammar, and formatting before submission.
Submit on time
Ensure all work is uploaded to Moodle Turn-It-In by the deadline.
Include word count
State the word count on your cover sheet as per guidelines.
Copy text from others
Plagiarism is not allowed; all work must be your own.
Submit late without EC form
Late submissions without approved Extenuating Circumstances will be penalised.
Ignore formatting rules
Follow page size, spacing, font, and reference guidelines carefully.
