The Migration Research Unit (MRU) at UCL Geography leads interdisciplinary research on migration, forced displacement, and multiculturalism, connecting scholars, students, and global partners.
The Migration Research Unit (MRU) is a cross-departmental, interdisciplinary research centre within UCL Geography. Founded in 1988, the MRU brings together academics and researchers from across UCL to advance understanding of global migration.
Our Story
Established in 1988 by Professor Emeritus John Salt, the MRU has a long-standing reputation for shaping migration research at UCL and beyond. The late Professor Claire Dwyer served as Co-Director until 2019.
The MRU is co-directed by Professor Johanna Waters, Professor Ben Page, and Dr Caroline Oliver. The Migration and Society journal is co-edited by Dr Mette Berg, Professor Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, and Professor Johanna Waters.
MRU research is funded by major bodies including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the European Union (EU), and the Leverhulme Trust. Consultancy clients include the Department for International Development (DfID) and the Home Office. Current work examines refugees, humanitarian assistance, diasporas and remittances, religion, and multiculturalism.
15 More than 15 PhD students and around 20 MSc students each year contribute to MRU’s dynamic academic community.
