Exploring the rapid, unstable retreat of the central British–Irish Ice Sheet post-LGM
Explore Investigating the unstable and rapid retreat of the central British-Irish Ice Sheet after the Last Glacial Maximum, revealing new insights into ice-sheet retreat and deglaciation.
Join us for this seminar in the Palaeoclimate Seminar Series 2025/26, featuring Dr Alex Clark (Royal Holloway University of London), who will explore geomorphological and geochronological evidence for the rapid retreat of the central British-Irish Ice Sheet after the Last Glacial Maximum.
Dr Clark will present new geomorphological mapping and geochronological data from northeast Ireland. The talk will examine how these records reveal the timing, pace, and drivers of the rapid retreat of the central British-Irish Ice Sheet following the Last Glacial Maximum, offering new insights into ice-sheet dynamics under full stadial conditions.
Dr Alex Clark is a PhD researcher at Royal Holloway University of London, studying the dynamics of the British-Irish Ice Sheet during the Late Glacial period. His work combines detailed geomorphological mapping, sedimentology, and multiple geochronological approaches to unravel the timing, pace, and drivers of ice-sheet retreat, with a focus on northeast Ireland. His research sheds light on ice–climate interactions and the complex processes shaping deglaciation during periods of high-magnitude climate change.
