Interglacial and glacial intensities over the past 1.5 Myr from sea surface temperature records
Explore 1.5 million years of sea surface temperature records, revealing patterns in glacial and interglacial intensity and insights into long-term climate change.
Join us for this seminar in the Palaeoclimate Seminar Series 2025/26, featuring Professor Chronis Tzedakis, who will examine 1.5 million years of sea surface temperature records to reveal patterns in glacial and interglacial intensity and their implications for long-term climate variability.
Professor Tzedakis will present compiled sea surface temperature records from 16 marine sediment cores and Antarctic ice cores spanning the past 1.5 million years. The talk will examine how these data reveal the intensity and variability of interglacials and glacials, highlighting coherent climate patterns across latitudes and offering new insights into long-term climate dynamics since the Mid-Brunhes Shift.
Professor Tzedakis is Professor of Physical Geography at UCL. His research focuses on climate and environmental change over the past 2.6 million years, using long-term pollen and sea surface temperature records to study glacial–interglacial variability, ecosystem responses, and the characteristics of interglacials. He has led international consortia documenting past interglacials, contributing to IPCC reports, and is committed to public engagement through lectures, media, and outreach on climate and human history.
