The Heinrich 2-step
This talk presents evidence for two-phase Heinrich events, using sediment and oceanographic data to explore their impact on North Atlantic circulation and implications for past abrupt climate change.
Join us for this week’s Palaeoclimate Seminar with Professor Luke Skinner. The talk presents evidence for two-phase Heinrich events, examining their effects on North Atlantic circulation and past abrupt climate change.
Professor Skinner presents sedimentary and oceanographic evidence for two-phase Heinrich events. The seminar explores how these findings refine our understanding of North Atlantic circulation changes and their role in abrupt climate shifts and carbon cycle perturbations.
Professor Luke Skinner is Professor of Earth System Science in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on past ocean circulation and its role in climate and carbon cycle change, particularly during the Last Glacial Maximum. He uses marine radiocarbon data, sedimentological and geochemical proxies, and climate models to investigate abrupt climate shifts, glacial–interglacial variability, and ocean–atmosphere interactions. His work provides insights into the dynamics of the Earth system on timescales relevant to both past and future climate.
"Evidence suggests a two-phase structure in Heinrich stadials, with distinct pulses of ice-rafting and deep-ocean ventilation anomalies."
