LGBT political movements in the United States have been successful in expediting the growing acceptance of sexual and gender minorities and increasing public support for LGBT rights. However, not all segments of what has come to be called the “LGBT community” have benefited from these gains; even marginalized identity groups have internal hierarchies that determine whose political claims are heard or ignored.
In this talk, Zein Murib advances a theory of “rightful citizenship claims” to explain why only certain members of the group benefit from political wins and puts forward ideas for political tactics that potentially benefit as many people as possible.
Meet the speaker
Zein Murib is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Fordham University Lincoln Center specializing in the study of race, sexuality, and transgender politics in the US. Murib’s scholarship has been published in Politics & Gender, Transgender Studies Quarterly, Signs, Laws, and Politics, Groups, and Identities and other peer-reviewed publications.
Murib’s book, Terms of Exclusion: Rightful Citizenship Claims and LGBT Political Identity Construction (Oxford University Press, 2023), examines how rights claims made by marginalized groups only succeed in attaining recognition and safety those closest to the prototypical white, male citizen.
