EDI, Research, and History of Art: Roundtable Discussion and Town Hall

Bob Mills is Professor of Medieval Studies and Head of the History of Art Department at UCL. Previously, he directed the Queer@King’s research centre at King’s College London between 2008 and 2012 and the qUCL research network at UCL between 2015 and 2018. Author of Suspended Animation: Pain, Pleasure and Punishment in Medieval Culture (2005), Seeing Sodomy in the Middle Ages (2015) and Derek Jarman’s Medieval Modern (2018), Mills also contributed the medieval section to A Gay History of Britain (2007). Other recent publications include a study of imagery of Saint Wilgefortis in medieval art in the volume Trans Historical: Gender Plurality Before the Modern (2021) and an article on Derek Jarman and notions of apocalypse in the volume Imagining the Apocalypse (2022).

Cadence Kinsey is Associate Professor in Contemporary Art. Prior to joining UCL she was Lecturer in Recent & Contemporary Art at the University of York. She has also taught at the Courtauld and Imperial College and from 2013-2016 was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research focuses on the intersections between art and technology in relation to questions of gender, representation, and subjectivity. Her book, Walled Gardens: Autonomy, Automation, and Art After the Internet is out now.

Baylee Woodley is a PhD student at UCL supervised by Professor Robert Mills and Dr. Cadence Kinsey. Her research explores legacies of late medieval queer femininities. It takes an interdisciplinary approach that detaches femininity from femaleness to centre its intersectionality, cross-temporal resonances, and methodological value. Alongside medieval femmes, Baylee is committed to accessible education, sharing queer hirstories, and biodegradable glitter. She maintains the digital archive Queer Art History, volunteers as an EPQ mentor with Art History Link-Up for projects focused on queer topics, and fosters her own femme fantasy through a performance-based art practice.
