Prospective students
Information for prospective undergraduate students.
At undergraduate level, the Department of Economics offers the BSc Economics (L100) and the BSc Economics with a Year Abroad (L101) degree programmes.
This is a three-year single-subject degree programme and provides a thorough grounding in economic theory, along with the technical tools, mathematics and statistics, to assist in mastering the theory.
The first-year curriculum contains compulsory courses on economic theory, applied economics, mathematics and statistics. There is also the opportunity to take optional courses in or outside the department. In the second year, students take compulsory course units in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. They are also required to take a fourth unit course or two half-unit courses, which may be taken in or outside the department. Economics options available to second-year students include finance, money and banking, labour economics and environmental economics. In the third year, students are again required to take four course units, of which at least three must be economics and at least two from a list of advanced economics courses not available to second-year students. Third-year courses are concerned with particular fields of application (industrial economics, international economics, economic development), advanced theory (game theory, economics of information) and further topics in econometrics.
Most third-year courses introduce students to research papers and current research, including that of staff members. Students benefit from instruction by members of staff whose research impacts directly on the policy process, for example via contacts with the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the Department for Business, Innovation and skills.
This is a four-year single-subject degree programme, which includes a year of study abroad.
The first, second and final years of this four-year degree are the same as those of the three-year L100 Economics BSc (Econ) degree with the third year spent studying economics at a university overseas. At the end of the programme, students will be able to demonstrate all the core competencies of the L100 Economics BSc (Econ) degree as well as transferable skills such as adaptability, flexibility and sensitivity to cultural differences, all of which are key to a successful career in a truly international discipline.

UCL also offers a number of joint degrees which are run by other departments. These programmes are listed below and you can access the relevant section of the Undergraduate Prospectus by clicking on the programme name.
