Caihong came to UCL Geography with a deep-rooted passion for the environment and a desire to explore the connections between science, society, and politics. 

Reflecting on his time in the programme, he shares how the course not only expanded his academic understanding but also helped him develop a grounded, purposeful mindset as he embraces the next chapter of his journey. 

What led you to study MSc Environment, Politics and Society at UCL? 

“My choice was deeply rooted in a genuine passion for the environment. I wanted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the field—from scientific concepts to political and societal dynamics. 

“The programme at UCL offered that interdisciplinary approach I was looking for. It helped me bridge personal interest with academic depth, which has been incredibly fulfilling.” 

Was there a particular highlight of your time on the course? 

“Yes—though it’s hard to pick just one! I think the most meaningful moments came when something I had struggled to understand finally clicked, or when my thoughts and efforts were recognised.

“That moment when the unknown becomes known, and when your ideas are affirmed, is truly powerful. Those were the sparks that kept me going.” 

What are you doing now, and what does a typical day look like for you? 

“Right now, I’m in the process of job searching. It’s certainly a different kind of pressure compared to my time at university, but I’ve come to embrace this phase with patience and purpose.

“My daily routine is quite structured—I keep to a healthy rhythm, with regular meals and rest, and I try to maintain a sense of peace and clarity. I’m allowing myself to follow what I truly love, and in doing so, I’ve learned to value each day for what it brings.” 

How has your time at UCL shaped what you do now? 

“My experience at UCL helped me become more confident in being myself. It encouraged me to let go of limiting beliefs and to step away from unnecessary mental constraints. 

“I’ve come out of the programme with not just academic knowledge, but a more grounded and fearless mindset.” 

Do you have any advice for current or prospective students interested in this area? 

“My advice would be simple: pursue what you love. The world doesn’t necessarily need more advice—we each have our own paths. 

“If you follow what resonates with you and act on your own thoughts and dreams, the journey becomes beautiful. Trust your process.”
