Why were you interested in studying the course?

“In high school, I developed a strong passion for both geography and economics. 

“Geography fascinated me with its diverse range of topics, while economic theories and models offered a systematic lens for thinking about the world. I could not imagine choosing one over another.

“The BSc Geography Economics course at UCL provides an ideal and flexible combination of the two disciplines. 

“It is jointly offered by two top departments in their respective fields and gives balanced weight to both disciplines.”

What was it that encouraged you to choose UCL to study it? 

“I was drawn to UCL by its academic excellence and inclusive philosophy. 

“UCL consistently ranks among the top institutions globally, and its Geography and Economics departments are renowned for their cutting-edge research and high-quality teaching. 

“Before applying, I got a sense of how the university is committed to education ‘to the many, not the few’ by chatting with some of the current students.

What were the most interesting or engaging things you learned on the course?

“I found the different economic models I encountered on the course particularly appealing. 

“From the 3-Equation New Keynesian Model for macroeconomic analysis to the Solow and Romer model for economic growth analysis, when studying these models, I felt as if I were engaging in a dialogue with the economists who developed them, impressed by how these models simplify and illuminate complex economic processes in an intelligent, elegant, and rigorous manner.

“Outside of the course, I enjoy applying these models to help address real-world economic phenomena and problems.”

Can you tell us about any particularly memorable experiences from your time as a student with us?

“The course maintains a small cohort of like-minded and friendly individuals, forming a close-knit community.

“One of my most cherished moments was spending nights in the library with friends during finals. 

“Although these were stressful and challenging times, we created fun out of them! 

“We motivated each other, exchanged insights, helped each other overcome difficulties, provided a shoulder to lean on during tough moments, and made progress together. 

“These experiences created lasting memories and built lifelong camaraderie which continues to inspire and support me beyond my academic journey.”

What would you like to do when you graduate and how has your degree helped?

“I am graduating this year, after which I will be pursuing a Master’s degree in management. 

“My training in Geography and Economics has granted me a handy set of transferable skills and knowledge. 

“These include solid statistical and quantitative skills, computational skills (with R, STATA, and GIS), strong time management, pressure adaptability, teamwork, and communication skills. 

“Additionally, I have developed a solid grounding in the key principles of economics and geography and the ability to apply them critically to various topics. 

“Not only can these skills and knowledge be effectively mobilised in my Master’s studies to analyse the internal environment of businesses and the external socio-economic environment in which businesses operate, but they have also equipped me to solve real-world problems in my daily life and future career.”

Would you recommend studying this course in the Department and why?

“Yes, I highly recommend it, particularly because of the supportive, friendly, and respectful atmosphere within the Department, not to mention the rigour of the course. 

“Throughout my time here, I always felt well-supported by the faculty and staff, who were approachable and willing to help. 

“My personal tutors were proactive in providing guidance on both academic and personal matters, ensuring I was never alone in my journey. 

“The Department values student feedback and is committed to continuously improving the student experience. 

“As a student representative, I contributed to this process first-hand and witnessed meaningful changes being implemented.”
