“In Perugino’s fresco of the Last Supper, the emphasis is on horizontality, from the long cloth-covered table to the uninterrupted lines of the paneling behind. Being seated at a table levels the heads of Christ and the Apostles, so they also form a neat row that rhythmically punctuates the patterned silk brocade. For me the scene conveys community in the way these figures come together to eat and talk, equalised and organised through the piece of furniture they gather around. It is reminiscent of the conference table and the seminar table, two physical contexts that undergird cooperative intellectual labour, which can flourish only in an environment of mutual respect.”
