US interventionism in Greece during the early Cold War, 1947-1974: a consequentialist interpretation

Dr Agis Papageorgiou completed his doctoral studies in History and International Relations at UCL Institute of the Americas in 2023. His PhD explored the ethical foundations of American foreign policy during the Cold War, proposing that consequentialist and deontological perspectives should be understood as essential analytical approaches to foreign policymaking. His years at UCL formed the intellectual core of his academic development, allowing him to work across history, political theory, and contemporary international relations. Alongside his doctoral research, he served as a Teaching Assistant in several departments, contributing to undergraduate teaching in global politics, political philosophy, geopolitics, and research methods. This dual role as researcher and educator at UCL shaped his interest in connecting theoretical frameworks with real-world political dynamics.
After completing his doctorate under the supervision of Dr. Tony McCulloch and Dr. Nadia Hilliard, Agis pursued a professional path that bridges scholarship and policymaking practice. Since 2023, he has served as the lead foreign affairs analyst at the Presidency of the Hellenic Government, where he provides daily geopolitical analysis and strategic briefings on international developments while contributing to policy communication. Agis has also worked for several years as a Guest Teacher at LSE’s Department of International History contributing to the delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses – earning FHEA status in the process, and in May 2026 he held a two-day workshop on small states survival in superpower competition settings at Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies. He continues to contribute op-eds on international affairs at Athens Voice Publishing, as he did throughout his UCL days. Looking back, Agis sees UCL as a most unique and competitive environment that encouraged intellectual breadth, interdisciplinary engagement, and the capacity to move between academic research and policy application, which are the key elements that continue to shape his professional trajectory.
