The workshop outlines how to enhance data story narratives using Python. It focuses on development of web-enabled applications (e.g., dashboards, interactive data visualisations) as effective tools to communicate data stories. The main premise is that interactivity and web-based applications increase specific audience’s engagement with a data story. Additionally, the workshop demonstrates how to leverage insight from machine learning modelling to develop and communicate data stories.
If there are no spaces for the dates for the workshop please do join the waiting list as there will be multiple iterations of the workshops in 2025 and 2026. Joining the waiting list means you will have priority in registering for subsequent workshops.
- What is the cost for the workshop?
The workshop is free of charge. Bursaries for participants’ travel and accommodation costs are available. Participants will receive further information upon registration.
- Who is the workshop for?
Early career researchers working at an academic or research institution/organisation (based in the UK) who wish to enhance their data communication skills are invited to register. Participants with protective characteristics are especially encouraged to register. Participants who attended The Concept and Practice of Data Storytelling workshop are particularly encouraged to register.
- Is any particular experience required to attend?
Familiarity with Python programming environment. Although skills/experience with data storytelling are not a strict pre-requisite, they would be helpful. To this end, interested participants may consider registering for our The Concept and Practice of Data Storytelling workshop.
About the workshop content
The workshop will be delivered in computer practical format. Participants will be introduced to functionality of Python packages such as plotly, bokeh, altair, scikit-learn and streamlit. Workshop sessions will focus on:
- Interactive data visualization
- Widgets and dashboards
- Using machine learning insight for data storytelling
Full schedule and logistics details will be sent to participants upon registration. Post-workshop, participants will have access to online practice-led supplementary materials.
Workshop convenor
Dr. Igor Tkalec, Social Data Institute (SODA), University College London (UCL).
Introductory dataset-specific session will be convened by a guest speaker.
