The Power of Maps

31 March 2025

On Wednesday 26 February 2025 James Cheshire, Director of the Social Data Institute, delivered a talk on ‘The Power of Maps’ to a group of A Level students at the Royal Geographic Society in London.

James Cheshire giving a presentation on The Power of Maps

Through stunning maps and visualisations, Professor Chesire demonstrated how geography is at the heart of many of the world’s challenges – and also offers a solution to them. Examples of pioneering thinkers and data visualisers from the 19th Century were shown and Professor Cheshire discussed how they are inspiring mapmakers today.

A variety of topics relevant to the A Level curriculum were covered, as well as looking at how maps are used, the power they have to present and represent and the consequences of the manipulation of maps and data for the benefit of some.

Maps and data have the power to expose truths that some would prefer to keep out of view, and through maps Professor Cheshire revealed how high-tech solutions can help us monitor changes and respond to 21st Century Challenges. The lecture was linked to Professor Cheshire’s book Atlas of the Invisible, which also has accompanying educational materials.

Professor Cheshire delivered the lecture for RGS-IBG School Members, and anyone wishing to join or attend future lectures should visit the Royal Geographic Society website.
