About Us

Data is everywhere. From physical records spanning thousands of years to digital data being generated every second. But in a data-driven world  how can we use this information to better understand society? 

The UCL Social Data Institute is a global leader in social data and methods. Led by the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences (SHS) it combines pioneering research with world-leading teaching to help society understand the ethical, social and political significance of data across the world. 

Drawing upon the breadth of expertise within the university, the Institute builds on the teaching of the Q-Step Centre and works with external partners such as the Financial Times, CBI and the Economist to provide valuable internships for students. 

The Institute works across a number of key areas: 

• Teaching the next generation of skilled social data scientists 

Working across UCL we’re creating a pipeline of skilled social data scientists who can apply quantitative and qualitive methods in both research and professional settings. Learn more.

We encourage and support multi-disciplinary research into both global and local issues spanning everything from tax systems in Latin America to the future of high streets in the UK. Learn more. 

• Working with external partners to help public understanding of social data 

Through our network of partners including government, charities, media organisations and the private sector we lead conversations on how society should handle and understand data. Learn more. 

• Promoting sector leading data science 

We promote the provision of sector-leading approaches to text mining, modelling, simulation, data visualisation, artificial intelligence and the analysis of large, complex data sets.
