Funding Opportunities

Funding opportunities available to Soc-B CDT students, including Research Training Support Grant (RTSG), Overseas Institutional Visits, and enhanced-RTSG.

See below for information on the funding opportunities available for Soc-B students, including:

Research Training Support Grant (RTSG)

Each Soc-B student is eligible for a Research Training Support Grant (RTSG). This allowance is intended to be used to pay for expenses which the student/supervisor/department deem to be in direct support of a student's research during their funded period.

Key steps to using your RTSG

Step 1: Email your supervisor to request written approval for the RTSG expense including confirmation that the expense is in direct support of your research.

Step 2: Follow your institutional process for RTSG expense approval. For more information, please contact your local administration team (see Contacts).

Step 3: Once you have your local admin team's approval, purchase the RTSG expense.

Step 4: Follow your institutional process for reclaiming expenses.

Step 5: Record your RTSG expense in a spreadsheet.

Overseas Institutional Visits (OIV)

Soc-B students are eligible to apply for up to £5,500 in financial support for an Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV) to universities or esteemed research organisations. The scheme funds travel and subsistence costs for up to 13-weeks as determined by the CDT Board of Directors.

The purpose of the scheme is to support and encourage the international engagement of eligible ESRC-funded students, allowing students to:

  • undertake additional specialist research training not available in the UK;
  • develop language skills;
  • establish research links that will be beneficial to their current or future academic career;
  • disseminate early research findings;
  • attend and participate in seminars where directly relevant to their research.

The competition for OIV funding is run annually, usually opening in July and closing in September. Students will be notified by email when the competition next opens.

Enhanced-RTSG

Students are eligible to apply for an enhanced-Research Training Support Grant (e-RTSG) to support significant additional costs associated with integrating the biological research elements into their thesis research as these costs would not usually be incurred as part of a social science PhD. This includes costs for laboratory and experimental work, and access to biological data.

The competition usually opens in June and closes in October. Students will be notified by email when the competition next opens.
