Born in 1987: The Animated GIF
at The Photographer’s Gallery

An Animated GIF from the opening sequence of Love Brid is currently screening on ‘The Wall’ at the all new Photographers’ Gallery.
‘The Wall’ is a flat screen video wall hosting the Gallery’s new digital programme. ‘Born in 1987: The Animated GIF’, is its first exhibition. The gallery invited contributions from a range of practitioners resulting in over 40 animated GIFs which will be joined later in the show by contributions from members of the public.

Eye of the Storm

This two-day symposium brings together scientists, artists, social scientists and policy-makers to explore scientific controversy from an interdisciplinary perspective. From esoteric arguments over the structure of the universe to highly charged public controversies around the use of stem cells, Eye of the Storm will touch on brilliance and ego, dissent and whistle-blowing, big science, high finance, deviant science, the reliability of knowledge and the legislation of uncertainty.

Martin John Callanan as Artist in Residence at UCL Environment Institute, alongside Richard Hamblyn the Writer in Residence, will be presenting.

The Nature of Systems

Technological systems create, fragment and transform landscapes: a long
video monitor stream, digitally mutated coastlines and strange urban
microclimates introduce fascinating artificial worlds, blurring the
boundaries between natural and constructed landscapes. Starting with
documentation of Chris Meigh-Andrews’ video installation Stream Line and
passing through a variety of spellbinding single-screen film and video
environments, the programme finishes with a presentation of Susan
Collins’ internet transmitted, real-time reconstruction of Loch
Faskally in Perthshire, Glenlandia.

REPETITION & SEQUENCE

“A sequence is essentially a whole in which nothing is repeated” (Roland Barthes)

Spliced and reassembled sounds, hazard tape formed geometric shapes; layered and ripped wallpaper; a field of miniature diagrammatical flowers; a video loop on sleeping; paintings from the same palette; ever evolving images on canvas… these are some of the elements in Repetition & Sequence, an exhibition examining artists’ use of recurrence of methodology, form and composition in visual imagery, in daily routine, or in sounds and movements. It focuses on transition and transformation, continuity and change, accident and design.

Repetition and Sequence showcases the new work of 13 international contemporary artists who live and work in the UK. Each is engaged in a wide range of contemporary artistic practices, forms and strategies, through the use of sound, photography, site-specific installation, video, painting and sculpture. Though diverse in background, media and sensibility, the artists share a collective fascination with sequence and repetition – an essential element of daily life. The exhibition, together with its associated publication and artists’ talks, seeks to explore the aesthetics of replication & series mirrored in our environment and daily life, and which viewers willingly or unwillingly absorb.

Sequence and Repetition first showcased at Bedlam Gallery in January 2007. Repetition and Sequence is the second annual thematic show offering newly emerging visual artists a summer exhibition in a major London space.

How We May Be, Tate Britain

Join us for How We May Be, a one night exhibition at the Tate Britain as part of the Late at the Tate programme of events. How We May Be is a photographic response to the current exhibition How We Are, a survey of British photography from the pioneers of the early medium to the present. This one night project, involving artists exhibiting in London today, aims to reveal new aspects of the work in the exhibition, whist potentially suggesting new directions for the photographic image.

You can also join us on the front lawn for a perfect summer barbeque. Have a drink and enjoy art in the open air. In the gallery, hear Trojan Sound System and guests including DJ Derek and see a performance by Bruce McLean. Plus, Terry de Havilland talks about style in How We Are, which you can see for half-price.

The image you can see on the left is the new railway flap sign we have built to display our work BEACON. It’s a development shot taken in the factory at Solari of Udine in Italy when we visited during April.

___ 1. BEACON / BFI SOUTHBANK
After two years in the making, we are finally launching the mechanical version of BEACON as a railway flap sign at BFI, Southbank from 23rd June – 12th August 2007. There’s an opening from 7pm – 9pm on Friday 22nd June. After London the sign travels to FACT in Liverpool and then Artists Space in New York. The sign has been built by Solari of Udine in Italy.

___ 2. ACCUMULATED OUTLOOK / OAKVILLE GALLERIES
The gallery version of Decorative Newsfeeds is part of Accumulated Outlook at Oakville Galleries in Canada from 29th June – 26th August 2007. It will be at their Centennial Square site with a launch party on Thursday 28 June 2007. We are also almost finished making a new outdoor version of Decorative Newsfeeds for The Junction in Cambridge.

___ 3. THE LOST O / ASHFORD
A new version of our generative music system called Diminished 7th is part of The Lost O in Ashford, Kent on 7th and 8th July, which coincides with Tour de France passing through the town on this year’s UK first stage. Diminished 7th was first developed for Arts Transpennine 2003 and used cows rather than sheep as is the case here with version 1.1

The Centre of Attention Magazine no.4 is on DVD and includes one of our template cinema works. The magazine launches on Sunday 29th July 2007 at the Publish and Be Damned Fair, Rochelle School, London E2 7ES.

Disrupting Narratives, Tate Modern

Over the last few years network theories have started to shape our thinking about social and cultural issues. This event seeks out artistic strategies and art forms that engage with these ideas.
