Research Fellows at RCA Computer related design. Industrial Design Projects are not proposals for design but are reflections on interactivity

Paul Virilio, The ARt of the Motor U Minnesota Press, 1995 p 135

interactive user friendly is just anohter way of enslaving human to machine.

Sounds with walkman. Distortion of sounds into spaces< not allowed

Visions of Japan Ita Toyita Toshi Hito. 40 projection tVs. Intention to interact but too expensive. Made tv furniture. Projections in the space.
Worked with engineers to look at TV and relation to other domestic objects. Tape measure. Explore relation between sense and non-sense. Active air - film. Getting away from physical interfaces and into space. Made objects but they activatd the air. Shadows cast by tv objects to be read like facial expressions. Would encourage people to interact with each other.

Revenge of interaction. Awkward machine to use. Have to bend down and manipulate lever to get image of eye. Maybe as we use machines we lose a part of our digntity.

problem with Visions of Japan too much liek a gallery. Want to work outside isolated spaces.

Project that came out of coming back to Tokyo. Surrounded by electronic space of satellites that contains us which allows commu
Edward t Hall - the Hidden Dimension. Cultural differences and distance. Telecommunication space - variable threshold. teleproxemics. The closer one moves to an object the more clarity. Opportunity with say telephone if it spatialises. Walk around telephone boxes. Different personalities can create different kinds of intimacy through sound.

communication through heat eg railway, tube. Would have to warm up patches on a bench to encourage communication. You must make yourself available over a given time.

How to navigate a building as a teletourist. ie through a telephone system. One might land into an object. When a person dials in receptionist will put them into objects and sound would be distorted. Used Netherlands Design Institute as a real case study. Object as an extended balcony - invisible sensor like on on a polaroid camera. People would connect on a daily basis, but a localised community say 3 buildings. Early models for invisible part of the system. Object on wheels which could be moved around so that people could get a picture of what was going on. The hole was the focus of sound.

Another object is a container of the conditions of another space. Be in touch with the changing nature of another location. By opening french windows could detect if someone was there.

Torso object where you could eavesdrop on sombody. As you walk past, sensor would trigger dance music. You would have to dance with the piece but then you could eavesdrop. Really is an embarrassing experience.

Electra in Oslo. RCA and Oslo through ISDN linkup. RCA location between library and social space. In Oslo in the gallery of Gregg Lynne's work. Objects not sculpture or exhibits but interactive objects.

Hertzian Tales
Installation back inot world of products. About electromagnetic spaces. Design proposals more like stories rather than designs for living.
Electromagnetic spectrum as coherenc ide of how we are living at the moment galler rats though to high frequencies wiht tv in between. WE ignore about how to make a meaningful relationship wiht this spectrum. Contour line relates to geography. Hybrid landscape of urban environment and invisibles using ray tracing technology. Faraday cage - one needs to go to great lengths to get into spaces with little electromagnetic space.

Antenna farms in remote places scanning the airwaves. TV showing the field around it. Dreamy nature of products which can be used.

However about paranoia - About spying - plug bug. Computer Intercept System
Radio Texts (Semiotexte)
Rething Radio
Radio just used to send energy initially.

LED screen in inflatable pillow. Plastic diffuses imagery. Wideband radio which picks up walkie talkies, garage doors. Picks up energy around the home. Energy penetrating the home. Put head on pillow it is possible to make the sounds clearer. In the exhibition space, did not work as a product. Worked with a film student to contextualise it in the home. An ordinary domestic setting rather than a designer one. Demos how to detect the ambient Herzian environment. How it can keep you company. Like a dog/pet. Aim not to get in user testing - to use conceptual products as a prompt as to how

Voice stress analyser - spying product to tell whether people are lying. How do you refer to using these works in other contexts. Fax machine - handheld fax. Japanese sending obscene faxes of the body.

Car radio - radio which tunes to the most local station as you cross the landscape. Looked at telephone scanner. Used to find bugs around Knightsbridge - found one going on. Baby monitoring devices act as radios - scanners can detect these. People living in semipublic spaces.

Made video. Radio not broadcast medium but architectural medium. Proposal to tune car radio to speed trap radar. Use birds tagged by scientists to tune into them. Car radio does not need to be redesigned as an object but in terms of function.

Carey - Influence of symbolic zones in Japanese culture.

Electronic media and zones of public and private.

Relation of body language of the object. Phenomenology of perception. Relation of radar to people. Austrian project. Michael Recce belt which works by sonar and distance. Alvin Lucian experiments with sonar belts. Dancers learn where to find the sensors. Critical Art Ensemble - Electronic Disturbance. Electronic bunker in the city.

Nicola Tesslar and fields. Modification of fields. Interaction needs to be twoway rather than finding the examples.

Climactic relationship is important.
Patterns of data as visualised in the aether eg a colour spectrum - Simon. Interactivity is your interpreation of the object eg haptic. Body language orientated. Si - interactive qualities are almost semantic. investigation of gestures. Why should we take video conferencing for granted.
Humans leak - computers leak.
Carey - interactivity is what you leave there for people to interact with rather than the conscious effort.
