My practice-led research explores the Jungian idea of synchronicity, and related topics like Tao, coincidence and chance.
This investigation touches poetics, the use of metaphor and image within poetics, with particular focus on Paul Ricoeur and Gaston Bachelard. Time and rhythm are also mentioned; whether it is fundamentally narrative, or some kind of continuum, or the distention of our souls throughout existence, each of these experiences of time provides another means of approaching the mysterious and the numinous. This research also addresses the influence of reverie and dreaming, as well as visions and hallucinations, upon synchronistic events. Topics like affinity, metaphor and rhythm are examined within a contemporary and historical fine art practice, with particular attention on the landscape and travel. Though many of these themes were secularised by the Romantics, they continue to inspire today.
