Shi Yun Teo – BA/BFA

Based London and Singapore

I create short videos that explore longing and expressing Chinese idioms in modern society. Often beginning my work with research into Chinese rituals, folklore and arthouse films. Editing and documenting rituals play a crucial role in my practice. Shooting on a point-and-shoot camera, printing and rephotographing the results several times using chemicals and light to mark or distort the images. Just like how I use found footages online and re-contextualise it in my work. To tell a new story through the interplaying of visuals and aural. A rapid play of imagery combined with layered soundtracks whilst the narrative moves between mythology and strange fiction. I am expanding my practice to film installation, to fully immerse my audiences into my fantasy. Using the sounds of traditional Chinese string instruments and percussion to create my aural motifs.
