ALOE VERA 3.G (excerpt), Hannah Morgan, 2020, video excerpt 2 min (full film 5 min)

AV3G centres on an Aloe Vera plant which has passed through three generations in my family. Exploring the intimacies of domestic life post death and the relationship between the matter left behind. It weaves through memories and myth: Lazarus to Aloe- the plant of the immortal- to a personal history of care, and the precarious nature of things. The film follows the entire ‘body’ of the Aloe close up, an intimate portrait of life that confronts vulnerability and forgotten aspects of the everyday. AV becomes vital through micro and macro examination, microbial contamination, chance encounters and witnessing of the aloe.

ALOE VERA 3.G. SERIES, Hannah Morgan, 2020, American oak, cast aloe stems in pewter, acrylic, ceramic, silver wire, steel, paper, video

AV.3G (Aloe Vera 3 Generations) is an expanded series originating from writing and film. The installation includes casts of the Aloe in pewter- a material referencing the ongoing investigation of objects that are memorialised and objectified in an archive context. In looking at the objects left behind, post trauma or death, they create a reflection - not only a reflection of the loss, but of the state in which they are being held.

STRATA DECENT, Hannah Morgan, 2020, cast ground in pewter, hand bent steel, acrylic, flint, stone and soil, film of descent into a sewer.

Strata Descent Series looks at the slippery nature of the aftermath of loss. Where memory becomes liminal and transitional. Through experimental casting of the ground- grass and dug holes to found flint/hagstones, I am shifting the horizon focusing on the space in-between. This opens up speculative propositions of entangled space, in particular mining, objects out of place, the underworld.

Hannah Morgan – MA/MFA

My work is sculptural installation. I combine film, audio, sculpture and text to create material components that consider contamination and collaboration. Thresholds, unearthing, preservation, trace, and speculation underpin my practice. I create narratives through sculptural assemblage and text/video that consider the sticky, liminal spaces. In particular, I focus on ideas of loss and transformative states of being, as a way to address the precarity of self, object and the natural world. I live and work in London and most recently received the Prankerd-Jones Memorial Prize for excellence in academic study at the Slade School of Fine Art.
