Flora Bradwell – MA/MFA

I am a London-based artist whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture, performance, video and installation. A compulsion towards the carnivalesque, a vibrant trashy aesthetic and the desire to playfully rub the fantastical against the everyday drive my work.

Compositions of frescoes, cult manifestos and nursery rhymes are squeezed through a generously grotesque filter to create dimly recognizable imagined worlds. Camp, theatrics and gossip combine to fuel visual flights of fancy. Recently vagina dentata booties with clitoris eyeballs have begun to populate my worlds: rich in narrative and psychoanalytical symbolism. These toothed quims were brought to life for Join Us, a multi-sensory installation made specifically for the Slade's Rotunda.

Receiving a Sarabande Bursary enabled me record my song Join Us with womxn's choir Lips. Here diverse female voices come together in a celebration that sidesteps patriarchal hero narratives.
