I work with the figure, but do not necessarily see the work as figurative. I see the figure as a medium or tool, where the work is about the situation and narrative. It deals largely with human interaction, disjunction and confinement. It also deals with the relationship we have with ourselves, and how we live with the inability yet the necessity to communicate. Coming from a painting background, I work pictorially, with many of the pieces being wall based. Colour plays an important role. I rarely work with one self-contained object or image because what is most important is the dynamic between the individual separate parts and how they form the whole. This is also how I see the role gender plays in the work. I do not use female/male as two separate entities, but see the female and male elements making up the whole - being more intrigued by the Jungian concept of the animus and anima, than boy versus girl. I use different disciplines, as my work begins with an idea and then I consider which medium would be best for that particular piece, be it painting, object based, text or video and sound. I view these different disciplines as a library from which to choose when thinking about a new project and am interested in the particularities each discipline has, and how that frames a piece.
