Social media allows learners to collaborate with other learners, or explore how the subject they’re learning relates to current news and discussion around the world.
You can use social networks as informal spaces for communicating and learning in your course.
Social networks can include:
- Snapchat
- Imgur
Social networks can help your learners:
- continue the process of learning, and apply that learning after they finish your course
- boost their learning by interacting with other students
How to develop learners’ social networking skills
You can use three key approaches to develop learners’ skills:
- Think about what your learners need and explore options with them. Learners might want a private space or a tutor-free space.
- Invite other professionals and researchers to comment and contribute if you’re sharing the social media space.
- Add motivating resources and compelling learning activities to social media that involve communicating and collaborating with others.
Use mobile social network apps in your course
Using social networking tools that include apps for mobile devices means you can send notifications immediately to your learners. This will make discussions immediate and relevant. UCL staff are also investigating other third-party tools such as Knodium.
