Overview
This online short course provides teachers with an introduction to the theory and practice of guided reading methodology.
The course is based around the book Which Book and Why (2nd Edition) (Bodman & Franklin, 2021). The cost of the course includes a copy of this book.
Who this course is for
This course is for practising teachers and higher-level teaching assistants (HLTA).
It's designed for those who are either new to the practice, or who have been using guided reading methods but not had training.
Course content
The course will cover:
- the structure of a guided reading lesson
- forming groups through assessment
- reviewing progress
- rationales and practices for text selection (fiction, non-fiction and decodable texts linked to Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programmes).
Teaching and structure
The course will be based around the core text Which Book and Why.
There will be three live online sessions on Zoom on. You'll also have access to online materials and links to sessions/discussion boards, curated on Sway, for 3 months.
Certificates
You'll receive a certificate of attendance after you complete the course.
Learning outcomes
This course will help you:
- understand the principles and practice of guided reading, the role of the teacher, and matching the book to the needs of the child
- be familiar with the structure of a guided reading lesson
- understand the rationales for book banding and levelling of phonic materials
- use the database included in the book materials to make informed book selection both for purpose and for learning objective
