Treatment of Eating Disorders: Training for Mental Health Professionals

Overview

This six-week course will cover the treatment of eating disorders in the child, adolescent and adult age ranges.

You'll learn about therapeutic approaches including:

  • individual assessment and therapy
  • family approaches
  • inpatient, outpatient and day patient approaches
  • inpatient refeeding in severely malnourished patients

You'll also learn about the development of eating disorder services and management of severe and enduring eating disorders (SEED).

The aim is to help you prepare for a career in the eating disorders field.

You'll gain a certificate of attendance at the end of the course provided you've attended 80% of it.

This course is run by UCL's Division of Medicine. It is part of the MSc in Eating Disorders and Clinical Nutrition but can also be taken as a standalone CPD module.

Who this course is for

This course is suitable for trainees and staff working in eating disorders services.

You'll need both the following:

  • a university degree
  • a qualification in a mental health profession

You should also be working, or training, in a service that accepts patients with eating disorders.

All the skills acquired on this course will be directly transferable to your everyday workplace. The aim is that this course will enable you to deliver a better standard of care for your patients.

Structure and teaching

The course will be taught face to face over 6 weeks at UCL's Bloomsbury campus..

Teaching will take place on Wednesdays, from 9am to 6pm.

Teaching is delivered using online lectures, small group tutorials and case-discussions.

Dr Paul Robinson

Dr Paul Robinson

Paul is a teaching professor at UCL and a consultant psychiatrist at the private eating disorder clinic Orri UK. He was formerly a consultant psychiatrist at the Royal Free Hospital eating disorders service where he wrote the books Community Treatment of Eating Disorders and Severe and Enduring Eating Disorders. He’s currently senior editor on a forthcoming Springer book Eating Disorders: an International Perspective. Paul produced the first version of MARSIPAN guidance for the management of patients with severe anorexia nervosa and co-wrote a book on this subject, Critical Care for Anorexia Nervosa. Recently, he’s been working on the updated replacement for MARSIPAN, Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders (MEED).

Dr Erica Cini

Dr Erica Cini

Erica is a clinical academic at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London and at UCL. Clinically, she practices as a consultant psychiatrist at East London NHS Foundation Trust where she is the lead psychiatrist for the Eating Disorders Intensive Pathway for Children and Young People. Erica is also a clinical advisor to Beat, the national eating disorder charity. Her academic interests are higher education and eating disorders research.
