Overview

This short course is designed to help participants:

• develop an understanding of why digital technologies (referred to as DT throughout the course) should be integrated into mathematics
• gain awareness with the types of DT tools available for exploring mathematical ideas
•  understand some of the key terminology related to DT and their use in education. 

This short course in grounded in insights from the Educational Technologies in Mathematics Education report from the Royal Society’s Mathematical Futures Programme.

Course aims

By the end of this course, participants will:

• Learn about the various types of digital technologies integral to mathematics education
• Explore the potential contribution of these tools to the doing, learning and teaching mathematics
• Reflect how digital technologies might be useful in their own context.

Who this course is for

This course is primarily intended for staff involved in and supporting the teaching of mathematics at secondary school level (Student-teachers, Non-specialist and Specialist maths teachers, Teacher Apprentices, Teaching Assistants), but may also be useful to primary maths specialists and FE lecturers or individuals with an interest in exploring the potential of digital technologies in mathematics education.

Course content

This short course is designed to give participants a quick but meaningful introduction to using Digital Technologies (DT) in mathematics education. It is structured into three bite-sized parts:

Part 1: Dive In - Hands-On Explorations

Get started with interactive tasks that let you explore digital technologies, no matter your experience or expertise level.

Part 2: Power of DT in Mathematics Education 

See the transformative potential of DT in mathematics education through engaging examples that make mathematical concepts come alive.

Part 3: The Digital Toolbox

Get to know a wide range of digital technologies - tools, devices, and apps - that support meaningful teaching and learning in mathematics.

Teaching and structure

• 3 hours approximately (plus 'Go Further' options).  We have added estimated times to each section
• Designed for teachers, working individually or collaboratively with colleagues
• 'DO' activities and 'THINK/DISCUSS' prompts designed to support your learning, often offering ideas you may wish to explore further in your own teaching context
• For 'DO' activities it may sometimes be useful to have a pen and paper ready
• For 'THINK/DISCUSS' questions, please choose the option that suits you best.  If you are completing this short courses with others, these are good moments to share your thoughts with each other.  If you are completing this short course on your own, you may wish to note down your thoughts as you go along.

Certificates and assessment

Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.
