Logistic Regression: an Introduction (Online)

  • 7 hours
  • Work at your own pace

Overview

This online, self-paced course provides and introduction to logistic regression, a common analysis technique for binary (proportion/percentage) data.

This course is delivered by UCL's Centre for Applied Statistics Courses (CASC), part of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH).

Course content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Odds ratios as a means of comparing binary outcomes between two groups
  • How logistic regression allows for other factors within this comparison
  • The basics of logistic regression
  • Model selection and goodness-of-fit with applied examples
  • Interpretation of SPSS output
  • Discussion of extension to the analysis of ordinal outcomes

Who it's for

The course is for anyone who needs to understand logistic regression, either for their own research or to understand results reported by others.

This could include:

  • postgraduate students and staff from UCL and other universities
  • those working in industry, the public sector, charities and think tanks
  • members of the public looking to build up their skills

Teaching and structure

The course consists of a series of sessions, which you'll need to complete in order.

Each session provides:

  • video and written materials
  • a quiz to check your understanding
  • a 'checkpoint' activity to help you reflect on your learning
  • a forum where you can ask questions

Finally, there is also an exercise in reading, critically appraising and interpreting a research paper using logistic regression analysis.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • identify contexts in which logistic regression is appropriate
  • discuss the theoretical basis of logistic regression
  • interpret output produced by SPSS when fitting logistic regression models
  • use the goodness-of-fit measures to choose between competing models
  • evaluate model fit
  • interpret and critically appraise results published in papers using logistic regression

Cost and concessions

The standard price is £100.

A 50% discount is available for UCL staff, students, alumni. If you're eligible for a discount, email ich.statscou@ucl.ac.uk before booking to be sent the discount code.

Certificates

You can download a certificate of participation once you have completed all the session quizzes.
