  • 70-150 hours
  • 8 weeks (70 hrs). Those taking the credit-bearing option have a further 7 weeks to complete the coursework assessment.

Overview

In a changing societal and healthcare landscape, delivering progressive healthcare is a challenging process. This online module allows professionals who take responsibility for the resourceful and safe organisation of healthcare practice to develop their skills and understanding of workplace-based leadership and its application.

Who this course is for

This online module will suit all healthcare professionals interested in improving their leadership skills. It is positioned as a foundation module within the leadership branch of the Health Professions Education MSc but can also be taken as an independent module for those interested in learning more about leadership.

Course content

On this module, you will explore theories around leadership and relate them directly to the contemporary educational healthcare environment where you work. You will take part in group tasks, explore your leadership style, reflect on self and how you relate to and motivate others.

Learning outcomes

You will develop skills that enable you to:

  • Understand yourself and your relationship with others.
  • Describe the scope, role, and academic responsibilities of leadership in contemporary healthcare.
  • Establish and maintain effective teamwork and communication.
  • Manage team members’ progression, including the struggling team member.
  • Guide the personal and professional development of team members.
  • Enhance leadership effectiveness through the use of assessment, including workplace-based assessment, supervision and feedback.
  • Determine appropriate levels of leadership autonomy to ensure safe and effective patient care whilst allowing team members to develop and extend their expertise.
  • Facilitate leadership development through developmental conversations to identify and address learning needs, improve your reflective practice, and safely develop your clinical leadership.
  • Understand why transformation efforts fail.
  • Understand power in organisations.

Teaching and structure

This module is fully online. It combines synchronous sessions with reading and group learning exercises on Moodle. The aim is to encourage self-directed learning, reflection on personal experience and critical thinking. This will enable you to engage in collaborative learning and to be in regular contact with module tutors for a high level of academic support.

During this module, you will work through course materials and readings and undertake directed learning activities with fellow participants. Guest speakers will share their leadership journeys and provide a unique opportunity for you to ask questions.

Certificates and assessment
