This one-day practical course is designed for secondary science technicians who are new and/or inexperienced with the physics equipment used in science departments.
The main aim is for you to learn skills that will help you support the teaching of physics. You'll learn about setting up equipment, identifying hazards and potential problems.
This course is run by the Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services (CLEAPSS) at IOE, UCL's faculty of education and society.
Who this course is for
The course is particularly suitable for new and/or inexperienced secondary science technicians in schools. (More experienced technicians may also pick up some useful tips).
The course covers:
- basic electricity
- setting up a simple circuit to test fuses, leads, etc.
- using a multi meter
- soldering techniques
- looking at 'hazards' in physics
- recognising physics apparatus
- setting up physics equipment and identifying potential problems
This one-day course is delivered as a practical workshop.
You'll need to be the science technician in your school.
By the end of the course, you'll have:
- learned about the different equipment that can be used for teaching physics
- developed your skills in supporting physics class activities
- enhanced your skills in identifying potential problems

Jane works as an adviser for CLEAPSS.
CLEAPSS provides advice and guidance on all aspects of practical work in science, technology and art. This guidance explores ideas for exciting and engaging practical activities that fire pupils' imaginations and then, unlike many alternative resources, goes on to show teachers and technicians (in detail) how to translate these ideas into safe and exciting classroom experiences.
CLEAPSS' membership includes more than 28,000 schools and colleges, mainly in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, where its advice is recognised by HSE, DFE and OFSTED as representing best practice in these areas. It's used by employers as the basis for carrying out their responsibilities under the H&S at work act, 1999.
