Degrees with German

German is the language of inventors and innovators and an important language in academia. It is said that Germany is the country of poets and thinkers.

German Studies at UCL

From the fall of the Berlin Wall back to the teachings of Luther, the music of Bach and Beethoven, the writing of Goethe and Mann, and the theories of Marx and Nietzsche, Germany and the German-speaking tradition have occupied a central place in Europe and the world.

Our strengths include medieval, early-modern and modern literature, cultural studies, literary theory, Austrian studies, the practice and theory of translation and language acquisition, modern German history and politics, cultural, social and political theory, and film studies. We include a Fellow of the British Academy, the principal British historian of the German Democratic Republic, and acknowledged experts on women's writing, especially drama, Austrian literature, and feminist literary theory.

In this Subject Spotlight, join Associate Professor at UCL, Jeff Bowersox, as he explores the German language with a keen focus on history and literature. Jeff will then consider the development of Germans across history, including an insight into their geography and culture, before taking a look into the foundations of German fairytales, and how the stories of The Brothers Grimm have shaped what we know as ‘Germany’. Jeff ends this Subject Spotlight with an exciting activity, which allows you to explore passages from Rapunzel and identify changes throughout the generations.
