Jill Dando's friends and family gather to celebrate her life and legacy

29 April 2019

Friends, family and former colleagues of the journalist and broadcaster Jill Dando came together on 24th April along with staff, students and alumni from the Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science, to celebrate her life and her legacy.

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of the horrific murder of much-loved TV broadcaster Jill Dando, the JDI held an event at the Royal Society on 24th April to remember her and celebrate her legacy (the JDI itself). Hosted by her former broadcasting colleague and Chair of the JDI Board Nick Ross, the event was attended by nearly 200 people including Jill's family and close friends, and JDI staff, students and alumni. The mood was reflective and at times sombre, but there was also a sense of real pride in the achievements of the institute set up in her name.

UCL News published an article about the event, and also produced a podcast, which included interviews with Profs Wortley, Laycock and Morgan about the JDI and more broadly about crime and forensic science. Prof Laycock also published an opinion piece in The Times Online.
