How to make more of a difference with cybersecurity research: Learnings from industrial research
The UCL Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Cybersecurity would like you to come join us at 90 High Holborn for an exciting event with Simon Shiu! Learn how to make more of a difference with your cybersecurity research. This in-person event will provide insights and strategies to enhance your impact in the field.
Cybersecurity is subjective, contextual, contested, and fast changing. This makes making a difference with research difficult. There are several cultural and structural differences between academic and industrial research. Using examples and insights from Simon's experience to highlight those differences, he will argue for changes needed and suggest directions to make the cybersecurity research community more effective.
Simon Shiu's bio:
Simon Shiu completed a PhD in computer science in 1996 and then joined HP Labs as a member of technical staff and spent over 28 years in industrial research. For the last 10 years he was Director and then VP of the HP Security Lab, managing an organisation that has a strong track record of industry leading impact in endpoint security innovation. He is currently leaning into my honorary role as visiting professor of cyber security at Bristol University and as a board advisor for the research institute in sociotechnical cybersecurity (RISCS - Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security).
