What is the aim of a Springboard Population Science Fellowship?
UCL's Springboard Population Science Fellowship Programme seeks to recruit the highest calibre early career researchers from leading international institutions, supporting them to establish their independent career and become the outstanding research leaders of the future in Population science.
What fellowships are available?
Fellowship posts are available in two key areas of Population Sciences: 1) Functional ageing and multimorbidity, and 2) Genomic, metabolomic, and proteomic predictors of disease, encompassing computational biology and systems medicine. Fellows can be based across the Faculty of Population Health Sciences, which comprises of the Institute of Child Health, Health Informatics, Epidemiology and Healthcare, Clinical Trials and Methodology, Cardiovascular Science and the Institutes for Global Health, and Women's Health. Applications are welcome from clinical and non-clinical researchers in disciplines across the life and biomedical sciences, in particular epidemiological, statistical, mathematical, bioinformatics, computational, clinical, applied and population health science.
If I am applying for the Functional ageing and multimorbidity Fellowship, does my sponsor need to be a Principal Investigator in the MRC Unit of Lifelong Health and Ageing?
This would be preferable. Please contact Professor Diana Kuh to discuss identifying a sponsor for this fellowship. Please note that you can have an additional sponsor based anywhere within UCL.
My research area is not covered by the two fellowship topics offered. Can I apply for a Springboard Population Science Fellowship?

What is a UCL Sponsor and how do I get one?
Applicants must identify a Principal Investigator leading cohort research or Head of Research Department or Division/Institute who will sponsor their application for a Springboard Population Science Fellowship. A sponsor is required to assure the selection panel that the candidate, if appointed, will be welcomed into the host department as an independent researcher. As such, candidates must contact and discuss their application with the potential sponsor prior to submission, and the sponsor must provide a letter of support as part of the candidate's application.
The Sponsor should be an academic within the Faculty of Population Health Sciences whose research interests are the closest match to those of the candidate.
Sponsors may be UCL academics who are existing professional contacts of the candidate. Candidates should approach Professor Diana Kuh (d.kuh@ucl.ac.uk) for the ageing theme, or Professor Aroon Hingorani (a.hingorani@ucl.ac.uk) for the 'omics theme, to discuss potential sponsors, and can also use UCL's Research Portal http://iris.ucl.ac.uk/iris/ and SLMS webpages http://www.ucl.ac.uk/slms to find the contact details of academics and Research Departments/Divisions/Institutes in their research area.
Candidates will need to contact potential sponsors normally via email to obtain their support. This should be done at an early stage in the application process as applications without sponsorship will not be considered for shortlisting.
Can the Sponsor / Springboard Population Science Fellowship be based anywhere in UCL?
Springboard Population Science Fellowship posts are available only in the Faculty of Population Health Sciences, and as such the lead Sponsor must be based in this Faculty.
It is possible to obtain an additional sponsor, for example where the research programme spans disciplines. Additional sponsors can be based anywhere in UCL, and must provide a letter of support, as per the lead sponsor, in the application.
I am proposing an interdisciplinary research programme. Can I apply?
Yes. Candidates wishing to work in interdisciplinary fields are encouraged to apply and may be jointly sponsored by more than one UCL academic. However, appointments can only be made within the Faculty of Population Health Sciences and as such Fellows will need to be based within this Faculty.
What is the duration of the appointment?
Springboard Population Science Fellows are funded for 18 months in the first instance. Springboard Population Science Fellows are expected to apply for externally-funded fellowships or personal awards during the tenure of this post.
What funding is provided for the post?
Springboard Population Science Fellows will receive 18 month's salary funding.
Springboard Population Science Fellows will receive an additional £10,000 to be used freely to support his/her research throughout the fellowship.
What is the typical starting salary?
Posts will be offered at UCL Grade 8 (£41,430 - £48,873 per annum) or Grade 9 (£53,119 - £57,760) inclusive of London allowance and depending on experience. When would a Fellowship start if I were awarded one?
This is agreed between the successful candidate and the host Division/Institute; however successful applicants need to be in post by March 2016. Note that interviews for recruitment are scheduled for 11 and 16 December 2015.
