Information about fees, funding, and the structure of our programmes for students at other UK medical schools who are considering an application to UCL for the intercalated iBSc year.
Programme structure
The degree is made up of modules with a value of 15, 30 or 45 credits. Each module has assessments, which usually include an examination and coursework. A 30-credit module normally equates to 300 study hours, which includes around 40 hours of lectures, plus reading, coursework prep and revision. All iBSc degree programmes consist of four modules and contain a research project worth up to 45 credits.
Programmes have core modules that you must take. Often, you can also choose between optional modules. Your programme tutor will provide details of these. Both your tutor and the providing department must approve your choices, as there may be constraints imposed by prerequisite requirements or timetable. All modules and the research project contribute towards the degree and must be completed.
Fees
Your fee depends upon whether you're classed as a UK or Overseas student. Your fee status will be confirmed if you are offered a place at UCL. See the Prospective Students website for details.
UCL's annual tuition fee covers all elements of your tuition (except any field courses you might have to take), registration and examinations. However, optional courses taken elsewhere in the University of London may attract an additional fee.
Annual tuition fees for 2024 entry are as follows.
UK
- Continuing students who began medical degrees in 2017/18 or later: currently £9,250.
UCL reserves the right to adjust fees in line with government policy (including on an annual basis for each year of study during a programme).
Overseas
- £34,400 for iBSc programmes.
Living expenses
Your living and daily expenses while you are studying will vary according to your needs. Please see the Prospective Students website for further guidance.
Funding
You can still apply for funding from Student Finance England (or your regional funding authority) during your intercalated year. When applying you must indicate that you will be studying at UCL and select: Intercalated Degree - Subjects allied to medicine.
If you have already received four years of means-tested funding from Student Finance England for your MBBS programme, you may be eligible for NHS bursary support for your intercalated degree.

Overseas students
If you receive funding from your home government or a private sponsor, you should notify them directly that you are intercalating at UCL. If you have any questions about your funding entitlement, contact us via studentfundingwelfare@ucl.ac.uk.
Students with disabilities
If you're a UK student with a disability, you may be eligible for the Disabled Students' Allowance. This covers additional study-related costs that arise because of your disability. The allowance is not means-tested. See Funding Support for more details.
What accommodation is available?
UCL cannot guarantee an accommodation place for iBSc students. Please be prepared to find accommodation using University of London Housing Services.
