UCL's cohorts of National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) trainees includes approximately 50 NIHR Clinical Lecturers in posts across UCL and UCL Partners Academic Health Science Network (AHSN). UCL has been successfully running NIHR schemes since their inception in 2006.

CL Programme
- Research
We aim to provide bespoke clinical academic training opportunities that develop an individual's full potential as a future world-class research leader.
Like all NIHR CL posts, UCL's posts offer six months per annum protected research time over the four year duration of the posts, which offer run-through training in the advertised specialty.
In general, research time is offered as a block release of six months, as in our experience, this provides sufficient time to fully engage with host laboratories.
Individual programmes have the flexibility to vary this according to local needs (including those of the trainees).
- 50% of your time - specialist clinical training;
- 50% of your time - research or educationalist training;
- The duration of the post is a maximum of 4 years;
- Expected to complete your specialty training during this period;
- Expected to apply for further research funding (e.g. personal fellowships or research grants), or support for continuing educational training.
- Success Rate
Since 2006, our programmes have delivered a very high success rate (85%) in terms of the primary objective of CL programmes in obtaining peer-reviewed, competitive research funding to continue on in an academic career.
The range and diversity of outcomes from a similar range and diversity of incoming individuals demonstrates that the flexible ad-hominem approach we take is highly effective in developing different individuals to their full potential.
- Eligibility
We offer a varied selection of Clinical Lectureship posts. Those who are eligible are:
- Trainees who are advanced in their specialty training, who enter at levels ST3 or above depending on specialty;
- We welcome CL applicants with a PhD (or equivalent) who intend to progress in their career as world-leading Clinical Academics;
- You must have submitted your thesis by the time of application and been awarded your higher degree by the post start date;
- You must have a national training number (NTN).

- Contract
Trainees hold a UCL employment contract throughout their post (as well as an honorary NHS contract) giving them access to library facilities, computer network facilities and other necessary generic research tools.

- Bursaries
NIHR Annual Bursary
Clinical Lecturers are entitled to a £1000 bursary each year they are in post for conference fees, workshops and research visits including travel, registration and hotel costs.
- Starter Grant
Grants are available that provide up to £30,000 over 1-2 years for consumables, to support Clinical Lecturers who are looking to develop and strengthen their research careers.
