Using oxy fuel gases safely within universities training

This course is for all UCL staff who use oxy-fuel gas systems within the workplace.

Course description


This eLearning course provides information on the safe use, handling and storage of oxy-fuel gas cylinders and associated equipment for a variety of purposes including cutting,
burning, heating, brazing and welding.

The course covers oxy-acetylene and oxy-propane, plus many other gases. The training contains information on:

  • Oxidants and inert gases.
  • Fuel gases.
  • Cylinders and valves.
  • Using cylinders safely.
  • Gas regulators.
  • Flashback arrestors.
  • Hoses and torches.
  • Safe handling of cylinders.
  • Safe storage of cylinders.

Once you enrol on this course via MyLearning, you will receive email instructions on how to access the eLearning provided by Gas Safe Consultants. Emails are issued on the Wednesday following your enrolment but if you need to complete this training urgently, please email safetytraining@ucl.ac.uk and we will endeavour to issue the email earlier.

Once accessed this training must be completed within one month; if not completed within one month your unique training code will expire and you will no longer be able to access the training.

This eLearning course is provided by UCL's partner, Gas Safe Consultants.

Objectives


At the end of this online training workshop learners will be able to:

  • Correctly identify gas cylinders.
  • Recognise how different cylinders operate.
  • Be aware of the hazards of asphyxia.
  • Recognise the hazards posed by oxygen enrichment.
  • Identify flammability hazards.
  • Select the correct regulators.
  • Recognise the need for flashback arrestors.
  • Select the correct hoses, torch and nozzle.
  • Recognise the hazards of using incorrect manual handling techniques.
  • Re-assess storage facilities in line with safe working practices.
  • Introduce safe working practices into their working environment.

The course has an assessment at the end of each module. A minimum pass rate is required in order to pass.

Target audience


This course is for all staff who use oxy-fuel gas systems within the workplace.

Cost


Training courses are free to UCL staff however your Department will be charged £50 if you fail to attend when booked on a course. Non-attendance at first aid courses will incur a higher non-attendance fee.

External delegates


Places to external delegates are only offered if there is spare capacity on an instructor-led course.
