Course description
This two-hour, instructor-led course is designed for staff needing to renew or refresh their "Safe Use of Slings, Hoists, and Mechanical Aids" certification.
Important note: This course is only for learners with a current and in-date certificate.
If your work involves using slinging and mechanical lifting equipment, hoists, or overhead cranes, you are required to hold a current "Safe Use of Slings, Hoists, and Mechanical Aids" certification. A refresher course is mandatory every three years to ensure your knowledge and skills remain up-to-date.
This training course consists of a one-hour theory session (morning) followed by one hour of practical instruction (afternoon).
To ensure a safe learning experience, you are required to:
- Bring your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes a safety helmet, safety boots, and gloves.
Refer to the Health Checklist to confirm you are physically fit to undertake this training.
Prerequisites
You must have successfully completed the "Safe Use of Slings, Hoists, and Mechanical Aids" course within the last three years to be eligible for this refresher.
All safety instructor-led training courses are delivered by our team of safety experts.
Objectives
The aim of this training course is to refresh your knowledge on current legislation and the theoretical and practical applications of slinging:
- Lifting and the Law.
- Slinging materials including chains, webbing slings, lifting equipment, shackles, eyebolts, hooks.
- Pre-use safety checks and inspection.
- The principles of slinging.
- Working Load Limit (WLL) angles
- Safe use of overhead crane gantry.
Target audience
This course is for staff who currently use slinging and mechanical lifting equipment, hoists, or overhead cranes and who have previously obtained their "Safe Use of Slings, Hoists, and Mechanical Aids" certification.
Cost
Training courses are free to UCL staff however your Department will be charged £50 if you fail to attend when booked on a course. Non-attendance at first aid courses will incur a higher non-attendance fee.
