Safety Risk Management Programme training

Objectives

The Safety Risk Management Programme is a collection of 6 courses designed for managers, supervisors and Principal Investigators. Working through the Safety Risk Management programme will help you:

• Understand your responsibilities for, and to use a risk-based approach to, managing the health and safety of the people and aspects of work activities that are under your control
• Create and develop a competent team who understand their roles, responsibilities, and the actions they need to take to manage any risks generated by the work they do
• Create a positive culture through leading and involving your team in developing, maintaining, and improving their health and safety at work
• Review and improve the processes you’ve put in place to manage health and safety risks

Programme

• 6 x 30 mins online modules | 3-6 hrs on-demand learning | No target completion date | No set order

Module 1: Safety Risk Management

To provide guidance and tools that will enable you to:

• Understand your responsibilities for, and to use, a risk-based approach to managing the health and safety of the people and aspects of work activities that are under their control.
• Consider the hazards and the level of risks of the work, the people involved in the tasks and the appropriate controls to put in place for the risks that have been identified.
• Engage positively with members of your team to improve safe practices by taking the right actions to help and support them in managing the risks of the work activities, especially, where there is a significant change.

Module 2: Safety Responsibilities and Support

To provide guidance and tools that will enable you to:

• Understand the health and safety responsibilities of managers.
• Be aware of various responsible people/job roles within the department and/or the team, of specific safety roles and their responsibilities, for example, Fire Evacuation Marshals.
• Be aware that having appointed staff to a specific safety role, the holder's appointment must be recorded in the Responsible Person Register in riskNET.
• Understand the key function of the UCL Work Health and Safety Committee.
• Understand the function of departmental health and safety committees.

Module 3: Safety Information and Reporting

To provide guidance and tools that will enable you to:

• Be familiar with and able to use a range of UCL and external sources and types of information, advice, and tools for managing health and safety risks, from planning to evaluating the response and recovery from an incident.
• Recognise the use of UCL’s riskNET and the importance of the mandatory modules e.g. the risk assessment module, for recording and reporting on key risks, safety measures and controls put in place, and demonstrating compliance with safety management systems.
• Appreciate the purpose and use of Target 100 for improving departmental health and safety management performance that has overall impact on UCL management of health and safety.

Module 4: Safety Competence

To provide guidance and tools that will enable you to:

• Define the right levels of competency for your team members that would enable them to understand their roles, responsibilities, and the actions they need to take to manage any risks generated by the work they do.
• Identify training needs of your team members, implement a plan for meeting the identified needs and/or requirements, monitor progress to maintain competency.
• Use different approaches to learning and training and to engage and appoint competent supervisors to assist in the process of developing and maintaining the competence of individuals in the team.
• Understand the need for and benefits of keeping training records for assurance and identifying further performance needs.

Module 5: Safety Performance

To provide guidance and tools that will enable you to:

• Understand the purpose of and processes involved in reviewing the performance of departmental health and safety management systems.
• Use data analysis and reporting to identify and address performance gaps.
• Appreciate the benefits of using Target 100 as a systematic way of measuring, planning to improve and reporting of safety performance.
• Use the outcomes of performance review to address health and safety key risks and to set objectives and targets for improvement.

Module 6: Safety Culture

To provide guidance and tools that will enable you to:

• Understand the right leadership behaviours in achieving a positive health and safety culture.
• Understand the health and safety performance measures to develop and track, complying with relevant legal and UCL requirements.
• Understand effective communications to raise awareness, engage and involve the team in the processes and activities that they contribute towards developing and maintaining the right safety performance measures.
• Understand how to manage resources to maintain and improve safety performance and a positive health and safety culture.

Whilst there is no completion target, we recommend that you complete the programme within 6 months.

Target audience

This course is for staff who are in a role that has management responsibilities, such as managers, supervisors and Principal Investigators.
