Safe use of slings, hoists and mechanical aids training
This instructor-led course is for staff who use slinging and mechanical lifting equipment, hoist or overhead crane.
Course description
If you use slinging and mechanical lifting equipment, hoist and overhead crane as part of your work activities you should attend this instructor-led training course.
By completing an assessment and test for competence you will be able to demonstrate that you understand the theory and practice of safe and correct handling techniques when using slings, hoists and mechanical aids.
You are required to bring your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the form of safety helmet, boots and gloves and you should refer to the Health Checklist to confirm that you are fit to undertake this training (you can access this via MyLearning).
Please note that refreshments will be provided but lunch will not.
All safety instructor-led training courses are delivered by our team of safety experts.
Objectives
During this course, you will learn:
- The principles of safe lifting and slinging
- How to select appropriate slinging and lifting equipment
- Safe working loads of slinging materials
- Storage and care of slinging equipment
- Using lifting equipment
- The use of fall arrestors and safety harnesses
- The legal requirements

Cost
Training courses are free to UCL staff however your Department will be charged £50 if you fail to attend when booked on a course. Non-attendance at first aid courses will incur a higher non-attendance fee.
