Safe and secure storage of controlled chemicals at UCL
27 May 2026
Working with controlled chemicals at UCL? Make sure they are stored safely, securely and only accessed by authorised staff. Take a look at our guidance to understand the key requirements and when extra measures are needed.
UCL stores a wide range of chemicals to support our teaching and research. Some of these are classed as controlled chemicals, meaning they come with additional legal and security requirements.
UCL is registered with the UK Government as an approved user of a number of these substances. This means we have a responsibility to store them safely and securely, and to make sure they are only accessed and used by authorised people for legitimate purposes.
Controlled chemicals are substances that are regulated because of their potential for harm or misuse. They include:
- Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) substances
- Controlled drugs and drug precursors
- Explosives precursors and poisons (EPP)
- Schedule 5 pathogens and toxins
We have published guidance on the safe and secure storage of controlled chemicals, setting out UCL’s core requirements. Depending on the level of risk, some substances will need additional controls.
Read the guidance and check your storage arrangements meet UCL’s requirements
