As part of the UCL Health and Safety Strategic Plan and Vision: 2027 and beyond, Theme 1 Enabler 2 Leadership Commitment: Leaders at all levels throughout UCL understand their responsibilities and provide the necessary resources to establish, implement, and improve health and safety management.

UCL is launching our Safety Surgery, based on the idea of a politician's surgery, which is a regular meeting to discuss problems, concerns or policy issues.

Key details about Safety Surgeries

  • Purpose: To provide a safe space to raise issues to senior leaders. The issues can involve:
    • Ensuring collaboration with Professional Services groups.
    • Gaining advocacy from senior leaders for departmental or individual concerns.
    • Ensuring that long-term actions are embedded in the culture at UCL.
  • Process: Submission by form to be discussed by senior leaders, chaired by the Director of Health and Safety.

  • Follow-up
    • Confirmation of action agreed by the Safety Surgery team to be sent back to the person who submitted the form.
    • All actions are added to an Action Plan to be overseen by the Work Health and Safety Committee.

Availability: every 12 weeks starting in March 2026.

Working with My Campus, My Services and riskNET reporting

The Safety Surgery is not a reporting or investigation route.

Working together: UCL’s Safety Surgery meets every 12 weeks, so it is not suitable for ensuring action is taken to make safe following a hazard report or incident. To ensure that UCL is aware of these matters and the correct action is taken, always use the correct reporting mechanism.

Is the Safety Surgery the right place for your issue?

Yes, if:

  • You have a recurring or unresolved issue, suggestion, or policy question that would benefit from senior‑level review or wider institutional visibility.
  • You have already raised the issue through your manager, Departmental Safety Officer, Safety Committee, or Safety Services.
  • You have resolved an issue locally and want to share this with the wider UCL community.

No, if:

  • This is the first time you are reporting the issue. Please start with your line manager or the relevant reporting system first!
  • The issue requires immediate emergency action. In this case, please use MyCampus, email safety@ucl.ac.uk, or call UCL Security on 020 7679 2222.

Ready to submit

You can submit your unresolved concern right now via our dedicated SharePoint page.

Remember: You will need to have a reference number (riskNET, MyCampus, etc) or an email trail to show us.
